Design Challenge:
To document, relocate, and rebuild the Grizzly Flats Train Depot at a new site while preserving its historical character and charm.
Physical Context:
Situated on a secluded residential property in Sonoma County, the new site features a whimsical mix of natural beauty and nostalgic elements, including a quarter-scale train and train barn. The depot’s design needed to harmonize with its storied surroundings and enhance the unique character of the property.
Solution:
The Grizzly Flats Train Depot was carefully measured and documented at its original location in Los Angeles before being disassembled, shipped, and reassembled on-site. Once reconstructed, the depot was restored with a fresh coat of paint, reviving its original glory as the iconic train station featured in the movie So Dear to My Heart. The project preserves a piece of history while integrating seamlessly into its new, enchanting environment.
