Kamen Residence
Sonoma, California
Design Challenge
The client envisioned a minimalist, light-filled home that harmonized with the serene beauty of its surroundings. They wanted a space with heart and soul, inspired by Eastern aesthetics—a healthy, mindful retreat offering unobstructed views of the surrounding hilly vineyards and the distant San Francisco Bay
Physical Context
Perched on 300 acres of rugged, ancient terrain with a 50-acre vineyard, the site is reached via a winding, narrow road. The house sits atop a gentle knoll just below a dramatic ridgeline in the Moon Mountain District, a renowned grape-growing region overlooking Sonoma Valley and the San Francisco Bay.
SolutionThis modern vineyard residence takes inspiration from Japanese pagoda rooflines, using a rich material palette of low-carbon rammed earth, weather-resistant corten steel, renewable wood, and high-performance glass. Designed to blend seamlessly with the rugged terrain, the one-bedroom home is a series of interlocking forms, thoughtfully arranged to frame breathtaking views while complementing the natural beauty of its surroundings.
