San Diego, California

Design Challenge:

To remodel and modernize a 1927 Spanish Eclectic-style home that had remained largely untouched, while respecting its historic character and elevating it to meet the demands of contemporary living. The design needed to maximize the potential of the canyon-adjacent site in San Diego and work entirely within the constraints of the existing footprint.

Physical Context:

Situated on a standard urban lot backing onto a San Diego canyon, the property benefits from natural ventilation provided by coastal winds. However, the original compartmentalized design of the home did not capitalize on these conditions or the potential of its scenic canyon views.

Solution:

The remodel reimagines the home’s flow and functionality by opening up the interior public spaces, allowing movement and natural ventilation to circulate freely from front to back. A semi-elevated pool anchors the rear yard, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. At the heart of the home, the kitchen serves as both the nucleus of the public zone and a portal to the private areas. The design introduces a modernized aesthetic, incorporating clean lines and contemporary materials, while remaining sympathetic to the home’s Spanish Eclectic roots. This thoughtful approach preserves the home’s historic charm while embracing the possibilities of modern living in its unique canyon setting.
